Oh so proud! Sep. 2nd, 2005 @ 03:17 am

Okay, so the fact that I don't have a classroom yet - let alone know what subjects I'm teaching - has me seriously stressing. I can't set up or be prepared or anything which is driving me CRAZY! I'm very anal retentive/Type A. Which is why I am now up at 3:10am writing on livejournal. I needed to get SOMETHING done, so my warped mind latched on my original goal for the summer which was to create a class website. MANY hours later. . .I have finished! AND it came out really nice if I do say so myself - for someone who has ZERO experience with web publishing and even less computer literacy. Check it out!

Even the star people are cooperating!  Notice how "accomplished" is bouncing next to a little computer?  He hardly looks constipated at all. . .

PreK Ideas Aug. 27th, 2005 @ 05:03 pm

Hello,

Normally I'm pretty packed with ideas for my PreK program, but, after a few deaths in the family, I haven't had much time to sit down and think and, with a baby arriving anytime now, I doubt I will. If anyone has any graphing ideas for an Animals unit let me know. I've scheduled a "Favorite Animal" graph during one circle time but could use a few more graphing / math related ideas. Thanks,

The beginning of the year... Aug. 3rd, 2005 @ 05:00 pm

I have hit a brick wall with my beginning of the year activities. I am looking to create a project that will allow my seniors (whom I taught last year as juniors) to investigate themselves and their beliefs and present them to me. I am definitely going to use the soundtrack of their life idea from this community, but I'm looking for other ideas. I like using portfolios and having lots of mini-assignments within the big one. Anyone willing to share any great ideas that they have for the beginning of the school year? Any help is appreciated!

Project Assignment Question Jul. 21st, 2005 @ 05:32 pm

Last year, as a first project of the school year, I had my students create an "All about me" ABC book. I would like to do something similar this year, but since I am teaching the same students, it needs to be different. As an example, I have created an ABC book of quotations. What other types of ABC books could they create? I'm kind of at a loss here and I don't want to narrow them in so much. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

» Certification Requirements
In light of all the crap that I have gone through to get certification in NY - and all of the comments I have gotten from people elsewhere - I was wondering just what it takes to be a teacher in the various states. . .In NY, it turns out that it is practically impossible (and, not to toot my own horn, but I am fairly intelligent - I can't imagine how some of these people made it): Master's degree, ATS-W, CST, fingerprinting - and forget about it if you're trying to get a job in NYC - do they not realize that they are part of NY state?!

So, if you're trying to be a teacher somewhere out there, share your certification stories - nightmares especially, but if any of you had an easy time of it, feel free to share and add to my venom towards my home state's system.
» Demonstration Lesson Ideas?
I scored an interview with a school I really like (yay!) and I have to do a demo lesson in 2nd grade. I want this to be kick-ass: creative, interactive, fun, etc. The problem is that most of my lessons are parts of bigger projects and do not stand alone. Any suggestions?

» Class Websites
My self-designated project for this summer is to create a website for my class. As I have absolutely no background in HTML or web hosting (don't even really know what that is) or anything I have questions:

Does anyone know of any really good class sites that I could look at as examples? (I found some from Google, but sometimes the great stuff is buried on page 127 and I never make it that far.)

Do you have any recommendations for FrontPage vs. Dreamweaver or some other similar product? I'm trying to figure out which one to buy - keep in mind I'm a complete beginner.

Any advice? Thanks a bunch!

Assuming I make it through the day without melting into a puddle, the career fair is after school. Well, even if I melt the fair will still go on, I just probably wouldn't attend.

I'm bringing a change of clothes to school to I can change in my classroom out of my sweaty day outfit and I'm bringing a face wipe and makeup so I can reapply. Too bad there are no showers so I won't be able to do anything about my hair - I'm not kidding when I say that it is so hot in my room that I look like I've taken a shower by 2:50.

Spent ALL of last night (wtf? this was supposed to take 20 minutes!) assembling my portfolio, but it is truly kick-ass. Maybe I'll get a job today! (Of course all the energy that I have now will completely vanish by the end of the day (or - who am i kidding? - by 8am), but we do what we can).

» Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday Jen!

To add to my positive mood on Friday, I was helping the school librarian reshelve books because of the end of the year rush and she GAVE me a whole bunch of free books because she needed to make room on the shelves for the book order that's coming in soon. YAY!

Also, one of the school aides where I work now is the parent of one of my kids at the old school. She reported to me that ALL of my kids did great on the testing and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is passing into the 4th grade - that's HUGE for the area I'm in. . .also, she said that she realized that I had a part in that and so she wanted to say thank you. Double yay! I didn't wreck my kids! I can do this job! Now we are so happy, we do the dance of joy!

Happy dances all over the place!

Now I just need to find a classroom for the fall and I'm all set. . .everyone cross your fingers for me tomorrow at about 4:15, when I'll be strutting my stuff at the career fair.
